If you’re reading this, you’re considering your first tandem skydive in Bali. The good news: tandem is specifically designed so that you don’t need to know anything. Your USPA-certified instructor controls every technical aspect — exit, body position, parachute deployment, canopy steering, and landing. Your job is to enjoy the view.
This guide walks through what your first tandem skydive will actually look like, from the moment you arrive at the Sky Dive Bali drop zone to the moment your feet touch black sand. Written by the same team that briefs every new jumper personally.
The Day Before: Mental + Physical Prep
- Sleep: 7+ hours. Skip the Seminyak beach club party. Stay in Tabanan villa near drop zone.
- Hydrate: 2L water in the 24 hours before. Altitude amplifies dehydration.
- No alcohol: 12 hours minimum before jump. Operators verify.
- No diving: 24 hours minimum before/after skydive (decompression risk).
- Light dinner: Plain rice, chicken, vegetables. Avoid heavy curry the night before.
Morning of: From Hotel to Drop Zone
- Wake 1.5-2h before check-in time. Light breakfast (banana + toast + coffee), no fried/heavy.
- Wear correct clothes: closed-toe athletic shoes, fitted athletic wear, hair tied back. Read our complete what-to-wear guide.
- Empty pockets: phones, jewelry, keys go in our locker.
- Transport to drop zone: 1.5-2h from Seminyak/Canggu. Book luxury Alphard via Bali Premium Trip.
Step 1: Arrival + Check-in (30 min)
Drop zone manager greets you. Sign liability waiver, stand on calibrated electronic scale (weight verification — 100kg firm cap), confirm health declarations.
Step 2: Pre-jump Briefing (30-45 min)
Your tandem instructor walks you through:
- Equipment overview — main + reserve + AAD
- Body position drill — arch your back, legs back, chin up. Practice on mock harness
- Aircraft exit — three-step count, “ready, set, go”
- Freefall — 60 seconds, instructor controls everything
- Canopy phase — 4-5 min descent, instructor may give you steering toggles
- Landing posture — legs up, instructor lands you smoothly
- Q&A — ask everything you want
Step 3: Gear-up (15 min)
Jumpsuit over your athletic wear. Harness is fitted with all 8 attachment points checked. Helmet, goggles, gloves. Final equipment check by instructor + safety officer.
Step 4: Aircraft Boarding + Climb (15-20 min)
Cessna 208 Caravan (or PAC P-750 XSTOL). 8-12 jumpers per load. The climb to 14,000 ft takes 15-20 minutes — your nerves peak here. Window views of Bali coastline distract you.
About 90 seconds before exit, instructor connects your harness to his harness — the moment you officially become tandem. He’ll start narrating (“3 minutes to door open… 2 minutes… 1 minute…”). Use box breathing: 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out.
Step 5: The Door Opens
This is the hardest mental moment of the entire jump. Door opens. Wind rush. You see the ground from 14,000 feet. This is also the moment you most want to back out.
Don’t. Within 30 seconds, you’ll be the happiest you’ve ever been. Instructor counts “ready, set, go” and you both rotate out the door.
Step 6: Freefall (60 seconds)
The first 5 seconds are shock — your brain hasn’t caught up yet. Then something switches. The 200 km/h wind doesn’t feel like falling — it feels like floating against an invisible cushion. Your stomach doesn’t drop (no acceleration once at terminal velocity).
Instructor signals “arch your back, legs back, chin up” via shoulder taps. You’ll see Pantai Kelating’s black sand, Tabanan rice terraces, Mount Batur silhouette, and ocean to the horizon. Helmet camera captures everything. Outside camera operator may fly past you for the iconic mid-freefall shot.
Step 7: Parachute Opening (1-2 sec)
At 5,500 ft, instructor pulls drogue handle. Main canopy deploys with 3-4G opening shock — sudden deceleration from 200 km/h to 30 km/h. Lasts 1-2 seconds. Then you’re under canopy, hanging in harness with view 360° around.
Step 8: Canopy Descent (4-5 minutes)
Quietest phase of the entire jump. No more wind rush — just you, instructor, and ocean below. Instructor may hand you steering toggles for gentle turns. Or just sit and absorb the view of Bali from 5,000 ft.
Step 9: Landing
At 200 ft, instructor takes back full canopy control and sets up landing approach. At 50 ft, “legs up, legs up”. Instructor lands you in a controlled stand-up on the black-sand beach drop zone. Most landings are smooth enough that you take 1-2 walking steps and stop.
Step 10: Debrief + Footage Delivery
30 minutes at the drop zone for debrief, certificate of completion, and equipment return. Helmet camera + outside camera footage delivered digitally within 24-48 hours — no watermarks, professional editing.
What First-Timers Always Say
- “It went so fast. 60 seconds felt like 3 seconds.”
- “I was terrified at the door. Then it was the best 60 seconds of my life.”
- “The view from canopy phase — that’s what I’ll remember.”
- “I want to do it again tomorrow.” (Rare — slot scheduling makes consecutive-day jumps difficult.)
