Two questions account for ~40% of pre-booking inquiries we receive at Sky Dive Bali: “Am I within the weight limit?” and “What should I wear?” Both questions have answers that affect your safety and your experience — get them wrong and you’ll waste a transfer to the drop zone, get them right and you’ll have the perfect jump day.

This guide is the most up-to-date, operator-side answer for tandem jumps in Bali — written by the same team who’ll be checking your weight on the scale and zipping you into the harness on launch day.

Skydiving Weight Limit: Why It’s Firm

The maximum weight for tandem skydiving in Bali is 100 kg (220 lbs). This is firm — not a soft cap, not a “we’ll see how you fit” — and we cannot make exceptions even if you’re an athlete or have low body fat at higher weight.

Why so strict? Three reasons:

  • Harness rating: Tandem harnesses are rated for combined instructor + passenger loads of approximately 230–240 kg. With instructors averaging 75–85 kg, that leaves 145–165 kg of headroom — but parachute opening shock generates 3–4 G of force, multiplying weight load. A 110 kg passenger generates ~440 kg of opening shock load. Above 100 kg, equipment manufacturers don’t certify safe operation.
  • Canopy descent rate: Heavier loads make the parachute descend faster. Above 100 kg, descent rates approach unsafe landing speeds.
  • Aircraft weight-and-balance: Our Cessna 208 Caravan jump aircraft has a strict load-out per flight. Adding extra weight to one passenger means another can’t fly.

If you’re between 95–100 kg, please weigh yourself accurately the morning of your jump in workout clothes — we will weigh you on a calibrated electronic scale at check-in, no exceptions. Showing up at 102 kg means rescheduling or refunding.

Height, Age, and Other Physical Requirements

  • Minimum height: 140 cm (4 ft 7 in). Below this, the harness can’t be tightened safely.
  • Minimum age: 18, or 16+ with parental consent and on-site signature.
  • Maximum age: No formal upper limit, but jumpers over 65 should provide a doctor’s clearance letter dated within 6 months of the jump.
  • Pregnancy: Hard disqualifier — opening shock generates abdominal force unsafe for any stage of pregnancy.
  • Recent surgery: Within 6 months requires written doctor’s clearance specifying suitability for high-altitude activity and parachute-opening loads.
  • Heart conditions: Stable, controlled with medication is generally OK; uncontrolled or recent cardiac events are disqualifiers.
  • Asthma, diabetes, controlled epilepsy: All generally acceptable with management plan and medication on hand. We carry inhalers and fast-acting glucose at the drop zone.

What to Wear for Skydiving in Bali

Bali is tropical and our drop zones are coastal — but at 14,000 feet, the temperature drops to approximately 5–10°C, and freefall wind chill brings effective temperature to 0°C or below. You’ll only be at altitude for a few minutes, so you don’t need cold-weather gear, but you do need clothing that won’t flap, tear, or trap freezing wind against your skin.

The Clothing Checklist

  • Closed-toe athletic shoes — running shoes or sneakers with secure laces. Skate shoes work. Not allowed: sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, heels, slip-ons, hiking boots (too rigid for landing).
  • Fitted athletic clothing — leggings or compression shorts on bottom, fitted t-shirt or tank on top. Loose clothing flaps in 200 km/h slipstream which is uncomfortable and can interfere with parachute deployment.
  • Long sleeves recommended — keeps the cold off your arms during freefall. A fitted long-sleeve athletic shirt is ideal.
  • We provide: Jumpsuit (zip-up over your clothes), helmet, goggles, gloves, harness. The jumpsuit is a wind-blocking layer — wear normal athletic clothes underneath.

What NOT to Wear

  • Sandals or flip-flops — they will fly off during freefall. Lost-property is real.
  • Loose dresses or oversized clothing — billows, makes harness fitment difficult.
  • Jewelry — necklaces, dangly earrings, bracelets all need to come off. Loose objects in slipstream become projectiles.
  • Watches or fitness trackers (debatable) — many operators allow them under jumpsuit sleeve, but they can be lost. Leave them in our locker.
  • Heavy makeup — sunscreen and light foundation are fine. Heavy makeup or false eyelashes don’t survive freefall.
  • Skirts — yes, this gets asked. No, you cannot wear a skirt — you’ll be hanging in a harness suspended in air, and the obvious problem occurs.

Hair, Glasses, and Contacts

  • Long hair: Must be in a tight braid or bun. Loose hair in 200 km/h wind is genuinely painful and can tangle in harness/parachute lines. Bring spare hair ties.
  • Glasses: Fine — we provide goggles that fit over prescription frames.
  • Contact lenses: Fine. Daily disposables are ideal — bring a spare pair in case one comes out during freefall (rare but possible).
  • Beard / facial hair: Doesn’t affect anything, no need to shave.

The Morning Of Your Jump: Body Prep

What to Eat (and When)

Eat a real breakfast 1–2 hours before your check-in time. Don’t jump on an empty stomach (lightheadedness during the climb to altitude) and don’t jump on a heavy meal (motion sickness during freefall and canopy descent). The sweet spot:

  • Good: Banana + toast + small coffee. Plain rice + chicken. Oatmeal. Yogurt + fruit.
  • Avoid: Heavy fried foods. Rich curries (Indonesian rendang the morning of your jump = bad idea). Excessive coffee (jitters compound nerves). Beer or alcohol within 12 hours.
  • Hydrate: Drink water steadily through the morning. Dehydration amplifies altitude effects and post-jump fatigue. Aim for 1L by the time you arrive at the drop zone.

Sleep and Energy

Get a full night’s sleep before your jump day — easier said than done with pre-jump nerves. Stay in a quiet villa with blackout curtains rather than a beach club hotel with thumping music. Our partner Bali Premium Villa has a curated portfolio of villas in Tabanan within 15 minutes of the Pantai Kelating drop zone — the optimal pre-jump stay.

Mental Prep

Most pre-jump anxiety peaks during the 30 minutes between gear-up and aircraft boarding. Two techniques our team recommends:

  • Box breathing: Inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Repeat 5 cycles. Activates parasympathetic nervous system, reduces fight-or-flight.
  • Visualization: Walk through the entire sequence mentally — gear-up, aircraft, exit, freefall, canopy, landing. Familiarity reduces fear.
  • Don’t watch jump videos the morning of: Counter-productive. You’re not a passive observer about to do something — you’re a participant about to experience something. Watch sunset, listen to music, do anything to occupy your mind.

Indoor Skydiving Prep (Optional but Recommended)

Bali has two indoor wind tunnels — iFly Bali (Trans Studio Bali in Kuta) and Fly Station Bali (Legian). A 3–5 minute session at either, 1–3 days before your tandem jump, is the single best preparation we can recommend.

  • What it teaches: Body position (arch, legs, chin) at terminal velocity. The indoor tunnel matches freefall wind speed (200 km/h) so your body learns the position before your real jump.
  • Cost: IDR 500,000–1,200,000 per session.
  • Bonus: Removes 90% of pre-jump anxiety. You’ll know what 200 km/h wind feels like before you exit the aircraft.

Body Prep & Gear FAQ

Can I jump if I weigh exactly 100 kg?

Yes — 100 kg is the cap, not exclusive. We weigh you in your jumpsuit on a calibrated scale at check-in. If the scale reads 100.0 kg or below, you jump. 100.1 kg means we cannot legally jump you.

What if I’m 102 kg the morning of my jump?

We will reschedule for any later available slot or refund. We cannot make exceptions on safety-critical equipment limits. If you’ve been booking weight-loss for the trip, weigh yourself accurately 2 weeks before to confirm you’re under cap.

Should I shave my head or beard before skydiving?

No. Beards have zero effect on harness or helmet fitment. Long head hair must be tied back tightly (braid or bun); short hair is fine.

Can I wear contact lenses for skydiving?

Yes. Daily disposables are ideal — easier to replace if one dislodges in freefall. Bring a spare pair to the drop zone. Goggles fit over both contacts and prescription glasses.

Do I need to be physically fit?

No. Tandem skydiving requires no athletic fitness, no upper-body strength, no specific physical capability beyond standing up and walking to the aircraft. The instructor handles the entire technical operation. Ages 18 to 80+ successfully tandem skydive worldwide.

Can I drink coffee or smoke before my jump?

One small coffee is fine and may help with focus. Multiple coffees compound jitter with pre-jump nerves. Smoking should be avoided 24 hours before — it constricts blood vessels and at altitude can amplify lightheadedness.
